Join us for a special Orange Shirt Day author visit with Nicola I. Campbell, author of Shi-shi-etko and Shin-chi’s Canoe! Through powerful storytelling and meaningful reflection, this event will help young learners connect with the story of residential schools and their lasting impact on Indigenous children and their communities.
During this event designed for students in Grades 2-5 will hear moving stories that bring to life the experiences of children forced to attend residential schools. Through Nicola’s heartfelt narratives, students will begin to understand the strength of Indigenous families and the importance of remembering their stories.
About the Author
Nicola I. Campbell is a renowned Canadian children’s book author known for her books Shi-shi-etko and Shin-chi’s Canoe. She is Interior Salish and Metis and grew up in British Columbia’s Nicola Valley. Many members of her family, including her grandfather and mother attended residential schools. Her books have won many awards including the TD Book Prize, the Marilyn Baillie Award and the Anskohk Aboriginal Children’s Books of the Year.
About the Book
Shi-shi-etko follows the story of a young girl days before she goes to residential school. Before her departure, she spends time with her family learning cultural stories, treasures the nature around her and gathers memories to keep with her.
