It’s National Indigenous History Month

It's National Indigenous History Month!

June is National Indigenous History Month. It is a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people across Canada.

On Orange Shirt Day in September, children from all across Canada came together to participate in our Orange Shirt Day Event with Coast Salish Author, Courtney Defriend. Courtney read her book If Instead of a Person, and we listened as she explained that at Residential Schools, Indigenous children were not allowed to learn the traditional teachings of their culture. You can access the Event Recording and Resources here.

Since then, we have continued our learning journey with our series of Coast Salish Art  Classes with Andrea Fritz and our Pow Wow Dance Workshops with Shyama-Priya.

Celebrate National Indigenous History Month with us by joining for one of our upcoming events! Or choose a past event  from the Archive.

Upcoming Events

Join us for our next Pow Wow Dance Class! David is Mohawk and Bajan, and has been dancing for nearly 20 years. During this class we will see pieces of regalia, watch a demonstration, and practice the basic steps of Men’s Fancy Dance.

Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with us! This month’s story is called Creator and the Little Flea. This class will include a traditional story, drawing practice of the basic Coast Salish shapes, and a guided drawing of a flea!
